Lately, I’ve tried to put myself in the shoes of someone who is trying to quit drinking – or who has recently quit – and come across this website. There is so much information here on the physical component of alcohol recovery that it can be difficult to know where to start.
A lot of people have been helped by premium supplements like Calm Support, but what if you can’t spend a lot of money today? The solution I’ll present is a solid step in the right direction.
As it turns out, there are three crucial supplements available for fairly cheap, and which people RAVE about consistently in the comments sections here, as well as in my online course and in emails to yours truly.
I can also personally attest to the effectiveness of these basic supplements for helping to ameliorate protracted alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Depending on which issues you’re struggling with after quitting drinking, you could at least start the process of biochemical repair by trying one of the below:
- Magnesium Citrate – Helps with relaxation, anxiety, insomnia (magnesium citramate is great too, but don’t settle for magnesium oxide)
- L-Glutamine – Helps with alcohol and sugar cravings (1-5 grams placed under tongue)
- DLPA – Helps with mood, energy, natural euphoria
Concluding Thoughts
If you try one of the supplements discussed above and find that it helps, then you’ve just discovered the tip of the iceberg. Intelligent experimentation with nutritional supplementation can heal your body and mind.
You can learn much more about supplementation for alcohol recovery by enrolling in my online course, Total Alcohol Recovery 2.0.
This course proceeds methodically to show you what pieces of your alcohol recovery puzzle you could have been missing for weeks, months, or even years. It’s never too late to fix the missing links in your recovery!

Chris, your information is amazing, inspirational and spot on. Thanks to fit-recovery, I am 36 days sober and the happiest I have been in years. Looking forward to trying the supplements because i cannot sleep past 2 in the morning…Thanks
Wonderful Bev, keep up the great work!!
Hey Chris. Thanks for all your doing, which is absolutely helps humanity as a whole. As Bev said a while back, sleeping past 2-4am is not happening 14 days dry. Taking BioRebalance (love the taste) along with other supps. Just started Kratom (~6 – 8 grams, 2 days in), along with CBD (50mg) & Herbal Medicines Deep Sleep. Any suggestions as this is definitely disrupting second sleep wave every night. Thanks in advance.
Great stuff Trey, and thank you for the kind words! Not sure what your Deep Sleep supplement is, but I’ve had good success with a combo of lithium orotate and magnolia bark for sleep. Both can be found on Amazon for cheap. Also, I sleep best when I get a sweat in during the day and read right before bed (TV gives me a sort of hangover). Keep it up!
Amazing blog! THANK YOU so much for all the great information. I felt like DLPA sounded like it would work for me (L Glutamine never did, tried it over and over every once in a while the past few years.Think there’s something in my brain that blocks it maybe?) When I tried 500 mg of DLPA after seeing this I felt an instant shift, like a boost in mood. But it hasn’t really happened again, possibly because I’m trying so many different supplements right now. How much DLPA did you take daily? I just started CBD Vaping, it is DEFINITELY… Read more »
Thanks for the kind words Terrie! Very glad you’ve found this website useful. As for L-Glutamine, some people need up to 6 grams, and it works best placed under the tongue. But there are non-responders for nearly every supplement due to genetic factors. I took 500 mg of DLPA daily for about a year. It never felt as strong as the first time I took it, but when I removed it after only a few weeks, I definitely felt less energy and a duller mood. I instinctually knew that the DLPA was still doing its work, even if the effects… Read more »
In relation to magnesium supplements what is your view of ZMA as a magnesium source?
Hi Chris, great question! ZMA is simply zinc and magnesium, two minerals often depleted in heavy drinkers. I think that ZMA can be a very good source of magnesium. I used ZMA briefly after I quit drinking, and definitely felt a relaxing effect. There are differences in brand quality, but as long as the magnesium is bonded to an amino acid (magnesium citrate, aspartate, taurate, etc. – not oxide) then it will be well-absorbed. In my opinion, dosage of magnesium should be 250mg or above to be effective. Many ZMA brands also contain vitamin B6, which is also depleted in… Read more »

Hi Tina, thanks for the kind words! I can’t open that link unfortunately, but you might find this article helpful!
Hi Chris – thanks for this informative article – I have heavy metals toxicity Beryllium, Arsenic and Mercury. I was alcohol free for 2 yrs but last year I had mad cravings for it again. Is there any supplements that can block/eliminate the toxins so that I can once again be Af?
Many thanks
Carly
Hi Carly, thanks for sharing this – sorry to hear it, yet very interesting and good for you for getting tested for heavy metals. I’m not a doctor and can’t comment specifically on how to remove those toxins. But if I were you, I would try to determine the source of the toxicity before looking for specific supplements. Perhaps certain types of seafood? There’s a good book on this subject called Dirty Genes – I recommend it! I will say that as part of my own detox regimen, I eat plenty of leafy green vegetables and sweat copiously during hot… Read more »
Thanks for the tips and information. I will look into them!👍
