One of the absolute WORST symptoms of alcohol withdrawal is anxiety. The word “anxiety” doesn’t do justice to the sense of impending doom, cold sweats, and shakes that too many of us are familiar with.
During post-acute withdrawal, anxiety often creeps up out of the blue and causes panic attacks and even relapse.
So in this video, I discuss seven of my favorite supplements for reducing anxiety caused by alcohol withdrawal or even post-acute withdrawal.
I did not have the benefit of this knowledge before I quit drinking. I discovered many of these remedies during post-acute withdrawal, and I used them to help me ward off anxiety and thereby prevent relapse.
Here are the seven supplements that you will learn in detail about in this video:
- Magnesium
- Passionflower
- Valerian Root
- Chamomile
- Phenibut
- CBD Oil
- Amino Acids – L-theanine, L-glutamine, L-tryptophan, and others

More On These Anti-Anxiety Supplements
Many supplements that work for anxiety also work for insomnia. If you’ve struggled with alcohol withdrawal, you probably know from experience that anxiety and insomnia go hand in hand.
The majority of the compounds discussed in this video are available in one supplement called Sleep Support.
Ever since I wrote a review of OTC sleep aids and recommended Sleep Support (which is made by the same company that designed Calm Support), I’ve started receiving emails from people raving about this product for sleep – and anxiety. I absolutely love this product.
To benefit from the supplements I discuss in this video, you could try some CBD oil (link is to a non-THC brand I’ve had good results with), make yourself a big pitcher of chamomile tea, and take Sleep Support before bed.
(One thing I didn’t mention in the video is that I’ve only tried non-THC CBD oil. In many states including mine, THC is illegal – plus, I’ve noticed that THC tends to make anxiety worse for a lot of people.)
Concluding Thoughts
Reducing anxiety after beating alcohol withdrawal is awesome, but it’s just one of a series of improvements toward rewiring your brain and improving your quality of life.
In order to really conquer addiction forever, there are more pieces of the puzzle that you need to get right:
- Further supplementation
- Relapse prevention
- Diet improvements
- Exercise regimen
- Mental strategies
- Maximizing Support
- Medications (for some people)

As always Chris- this info was awesome! First time that I have heard your voice. I still have paid for a phone conversation with you sometime in the future. I will let you know!
I so appreciate all that you do in your website! I truly believe that you are helping many people. I am the woman with the son that has gone through all that you have gone through. Tough! Thank God you have all of that behind you!

Thanks Karen! Hope some of this has helped your son – I’m looking forward to our future session!
I’m currently in my first foray into post-acute alcohol withdrawal. Almost picked up beer last night (had that strong dopamine expectation urge), but I’m keeping L-Glutamine in the car to kill the craving. It’s strong enough to curb the craving until I’m past my gas station trigger and finally home. I had some insomnia and shakes during sleep last night (first time I’ve ever experienced full body shakes), so I’m getting a feel for how hard these withdrawal symptoms are going to be for me after 2 decades of regular twice/thrice weekly late night beer drinking. I have some Phenibut… Read more »
Great plan Eric, sounds like you’ve got some solid supplements in the mix. Take care with the phenibut – it is effective but can cause dependence when used for longer than a week. Best of luck buddy!
